Active & Therapeutic: natural products that make a difference

Anyone who pays attention to Natural Mumma Magazine will know that we are big fans of the handmade, natural beauty brand Pure Lakes. We adore their chic, minimalist packaging, we love that they are made in the UK and the quality of their products is exceptional. I have been using their facial range for months. I use their Rosehip Seed Foaming Facial Cleanser in every morning shower and apply their facial oil and hand balm every day. These beautiful products have made a significant difference to the appearance and texture of my skin, so when the lovely people at Pure Lakes sent us through a selection of products from their Active & Therapeutic range we knew that we were in for a treat!

The Muscle & Joint Bath Soak and Muscle & Joint Balm contain black pepper, ginger and chamomile. These potent natural ingredients help to relieve muscle stiffness and tension, while soothing away discomfort. Reviews show that numerous people have seen significant improvements in their symptoms of arthritis after using these products. While no one in our house has arthritis, we are partial to a good massage and my partner gets really bad back pain (one of the perils of being a jobbing photographer as well as spending long days at the desk as creative director of our magazine). For those of you who aren’t aware, I spent many years as a massage therapist. I had my own practice and worked with private clients, as well as a rehabilitation massage therapist with stroke victims. I even worked backstage at several high profile gigs. So when it comes to massage balms and preparations I have not only tried them all, but I have even made my own.

I found that the Muscle & Joint Balm is the perfect consistency to provide a good deep massage. Whereas normal moisturisers absorb too quickly into the skin and create friction, there are enough natural oils in the balm to keep the skin lubricated. That isn’t to say that the cream doesn’t absorb. It feeds the skin well and creates a wonderful warming effect as it does so. You could just as easily apply it yourself too, for instant relief on aching muscle or stiff joints.

Gez found that it really helped to soothe his back and we are definitely going to continue using it on a regular basis. The Bath Soak simply adds to the relaxing and soothing effects. It is the perfect way to unwind and release tension after a long day on your feet or after many hours spent at your desk. It is also a wonderful warming treat after a long walk, making it particularly welcome in this cold weather!

The scent is deliciously invigorating and spicy, ideal for both sexes. The chic glass packaging also has unisex appeal.

If the harsh winter weather is taking its toll on your skin, then you’ll absolutely love the Dry Skin Balm. It is enriched with shea butter, calendula and beeswax to really feed and soothe your skin. Cocoa butter, avocado oil, Vitamin E and aloe vera add to the hydrating benefits of this preparation. I’ve been using it to protect my skin against the cold before going outdoors, as well as applying it before bed as a night cream. It has a beautiful rich, creamy consistency that feels deliciously indulgent to apply. The light verdant scent is appealing and it leaves your skin feeling nurtured and noticeably smoother.

The Skin Repair Bar comes in a smart tin which not only looks fabulous, but makes the bar a nice lightweight and durable addition to your handbag. The zingy scent from the combination of grapefruit and lemongrass is delightfully uplifting. It’s a great little product for instantly softening rough areas such as knees and elbows. It even works well as a soothing lipbalm. It is so easy to apply, you just rub your fingers over the bar and smear the residue into your skin. It absorbs easily and leaves everything much softer and far more fragrant than before.

There is something a little sad about hiding our feet away in the winter months, but the Pure Lakes Foot Gel is the perfect way to look after your neglected feet. Tea tree, rosemary and geranium have been specially selected for their antibacterial properties. Rubbing this soothing gel into your feet will not just help them feel rested and revived, but they will also smell wonderful and feel so much softer. I love applying this after a long soak in the tub with a generous helping of the Muscle & Joint Bath Soak. If you are into long walks, or have a job that keeps you on your feet all day (or even a penchant for dangerous heels like I do) then you’ll be very grateful for this lovely lightweight gel.

We love the look of the whole range, as well as the fragrances. You always know with Pure Lakes that when they promise results they will deliver.
